Postecoglou says Spurs players need help in transfer window
Ange Postecoglou says Tottenham need new signings to help their injury-ravaged squad, predicting the end of the league phase of European football could spark a glut of transfer activity.
Postecoglou was without 14 players for Thursday's vital 3-2 win over Hoffenheim in the Europa League due to a combination of injuries and eligibility issues.
That result was a major step towards a top-eight finish in the group stage, but Tottenham are languishing in 15th place in the Premier League after a disastrous run of one win in 10 top-flight matches.
Tottenham boss Postecoglou revealed post-match on Thursday that England striker Dominic Solanke would be out of action for about six weeks with a knee injury, deepening his problems.
The Australian insisted Solanke's injury would not change the club's transfer plans, but he suspects there could be a flurry of activity before the window shuts on February 3.
The group phase of the Champions League ends next Wednesday, with the Europa League group stage finishing the following day.
Asked if that could spark a busy end to the transfer window, Postecoglou admitted: "Yeah, potentially.
"I mean I really think that has been a factor because if you look at the way European competitions are stacked up, that would be done and dusted by now and people would know if they are in the Champions League or if they are in the Europa League and adjusted their sights."
He added: "If there are any significant clubs in there and out of the competition, it may make things happen a little bit quicker.
"It's not just about bringing in another body, but there is still no doubt we need to help these players because we've still got some significant games in the next two or three weeks before we get players back."
Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky and defender Sergio Reguilon are available for Sunday's crucial fixture at home to fellow strugglers Leicester after being ineligible for the Europa League tie.
But Postecoglou revealed there is a doubt over Djed Spence, while Pape Sarr and Yves Bissouma could also miss out again.
Tottenham's injury problems have led to criticism of Postecoglou's tactics and the level of intensity in training.
The former Celtic boss accepts the blame for the rash of injuries, but is adamant Tottenham remain on the right path under his leadership.
"It's just injuries. You can walk outside and say, 'jeez it's really bright', and say to yourself maybe it's not the sun. But it is the sun, mate, we've just got injuries," he said.
"I'm responsible for this, if you want a head on a stick, take mine, but I'm absolutely 100 percent confident that we are in a better place as a football club than when I started."
