The 28-year-old posted a time of 1min 48.05sec over his two runs, 0.20sec faster than hometown favourite Manuel Feller with another Austrian in Fabio Gstrein a further 0.47sec behind.

"It's so crazy, it's by far my greatest victory," Haugan said.

"There's so much emotion when you cross the finish line and see that you're ahead, it's something I can't describe."

It was Haugan's second World Cup victory of the season, following his success in the same discipline in Alta Badia, Italy last month.

His compatriot Henrik Kristoffersen finished in eighth place but moved to the top of the slalom standings on 467 points after previous leader Clement Noel of France failed to finish.

The Beijing 2022 Olympic slalom champion left the piste on his second run and ended up pointless for the event.

It was the last World Cup slalom before the World Championships, which take place in Saalbach, Austria from February 4-16.
